Central Processing Unit

While CPU does stand for Central Processing Unit, most people use the term processor, CPU, or very occasionally the microprocessor.

The processor is the brain of the computer. It's job is to process data. The quality (speed) of the processor determines how fast the system will run.

The processor is the most expensive component in a computer, with price being determined primarily by speed (700 MHz to 3+ GHz) and efficiency. There are two popular manufacturers, AMC and Intel.

Among those with little computer knowledge, the term "CPU" is sometimes used to refer to the computer's case. This is incorrect. The CPU is a component within the case, it is not the case. Try to avoid this error.
