Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPEG is a cross-platform (Mac and PC) image file compression format. Unlike GIF, JPEG is not limited in color rendition. Therefore, is the most common format for compressing photographic images. However, JPEG is a "lossy" format, meaning that some quality is lost in compression. If the image is overly compressed, the graphic becomes noticeably "blocky." The extension for JPEG is .jpg.
