Plug and Play

Plug and Play is the ability of some operating systems to automatically detect and identify a new device added to a system, and to install the appropriate drivers and system files for that device. This eliminates the need of the user to go through complicated installation procedures.

Macintosh computers have always been plug and play. PnP is partly supported by Windows 95 OSR2+, and fully supported by Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Linux.
