ZIP

Many files available for download on the Internet are "ZIP files". A ZIP file is a compressed file which can contain one or more original files. Storing files in the ZIP format has two advantages:

1. All of the files associated with a particular program can be downloaded as one file, and

2. Compressed files are smaller files, which means faster download time.

The degree of compression depends on the type of the original file. Word and database documents will often compress down to 10 percent of their original size. However, graphic image files usually compress very little.

After downloading a ZIP file, it is a simple matter to unZIP or extract the file for use.

Note: Don't confuse ZIP compressed files with the Zip® disk drive system. ZIP files are a type of file, and is not related to the Zip® disk drive system, which is a very fine product manufactured by Iomega®.
