or drive bay

An rectangular opening or shelf on the front of a computer cabinet designed to hold disc drives, such as a CD player or floppy disk drive. A drive bay will have a metal bracket device with holes for easy installation. Usually one or more empty bays will be availble for the installation of additional disc drives.

Some bays, such as those for hard disks, are inside the computer cabinet and are not visible to the user.
