firewall

A firewall is designed to be a barrier or fence to prevent unauthorized access to a server, computer network, or individual computer. A firewall can be a software program or a hardware-based device. It is usally the first line of defense against intrusion.

Two common computer devices, the proxy server and the router have firewall qualities. Of the two, the proxy server has the strongest firewall qualities. Routers also offer protection against some forms of intrusion. A router used for this purpose should be used in conjunction with a good firewall program.

Firewalls should alwasy be used, even on home computers, especially if financial information is in the computer. If security is a serious concern, also consider encryption.
