hit counter

A small program, a hit counter can be installed on any website. Often it is located on the website's last page.

Most people believe a hit counter will count the number of visitors to a website. That is not true. Instead, a hit counter will count the number of individual files or website pages that have been accessed or "hit". To get a very rough estimate of the number of visitors to a website, divide the number of website pages by the total number of recorded hits.

A far more accurate means of determining the number of visitors to a website is by obtaining the number of "user sessions," or site visitors to a website from the Server Logs at the website host. Many hosts provide reports.
