proxy server

A proxy server is a network server in which all computers on a network must go through in order to access the Internet.

They offer several benefits. First, a proxy server will improve network speed and browsing performance by using its own cache system. More importantly, they will filter what users on the network can access. Thus what is accessible on the Internet can be restricted to whatever degree is desired. Specific websites can be totally blocked from access. This is a primary reason why some companies have a proxy server.

Incidentally, there is a very powerful side benefit to having a proxy server. They act as a very effective firewall. So, the proxy server will better secure sensitive data within the network's computers and database. It will effectively guard against attempts of unauthorized access and various other acts of mischief.
